With my brain firing on all cylinders, if I have a lot of work I need to finish, I’m ready to make a bit of headway with the day’s tasks for a good couple of hours. From the standpoint of bhakti Yoga, it is the devotion that is the point, not that a particular object is suggested for that devotion. And is it this union and this yoga, that gives me the strength, wisdom and knowledge to handle and breathe through every situation that I am faced with. It gives us the power to overcome barriers and burdens. Instead of one long block of work interrupted by lunch mid-day, it’s multiple blocks of work interrupted by even smaller blocks of «life».
It’s a lesson I’ve read about plenty of times, but one that was only made concrete in the soft light of the studio. As Harry Roberts says in his Webstock talk: it’s «life and work» not «life vs. Typically, my intense work sessions are divided into smaller blocks of time, separated by even smaller chunks of time where I walk away from the screen, go grab a snack, make tea, chat with friends and family, help out around the house, make a smoothie, make food (I don’t just eat it, lol)… Shifting blocks of work around the day and alternating between work and life sessions has worked pretty well and has helped me manage my time better and achieve better work-life balance. In that case, I might end up Exercising, having late breakfast, and then doing a Personal block in the early afternoon, followed by a lighter work block in the late afternoon before I call it a (productive) day.
A block may move around the schedule on any given day. As we move forward with physical posture, breathing practices, and meditation, it calms our mind, and we start seeing the world differently. Concentrating on poses clears the mind, while focusing on the breath helps the body shift out of fight or flight mode. First, the Yoga which is called by the name of Laya Yoga, the Yoga of the centres which produced a stabilizing of the etheric body and of the centres in man and the development of the astral and psychic nature. We reach enlightenment, if we take the happiness of our fellow man more important than our own happiness. That which we know as Yoga is the method by which evolution is quickened in the individual, and all the powers of the Self, up to the threshold of divinity, may by it be brought into manifestation in the man of the present. To many Hindus, the Trimurti comprises the threefold manifestation of Absolute Realty: Brahman According to the 1986 World Almanac, there are more than 461,000,000 followers of Hinduism worldwide.
Those who foster and encourage this goal to a happy world creates positivity within. Raja Yoga, and the fifth initiation, that of adept, is the goal for evolving humanity. I personally practice a combination of Hatha and Raja yoga. Make a personal choice: The Yoga practices of self-awareness, self-training, and self-discovery are non-sectarian, and are compatible with all religions. I do not think false religions should have all the best exercises any more than I think we should let them have all the best music. We can overwhelm ourselves and work too hard and have no energy left for happiness. But there’s a little more happening in each block as I work to maintain a healthy work-life balance… Sometimes if I get into the flow of work in the early morning, the creative/meaningful work session extends well beyond 7:30am, what is yoga pushing the Exercise block into the late morning. In this way we overcome our ego and get a unity consciousness.
