Overview

Hull is on the way back after slipping down domestic rankings and falling in popularity. Applications are climbing once more, with Hull appealing to prospective students thanks to a renewed focus on the student experience, which received a gold rating in last year’s Teaching Excellence Framework assessments. Students have responded with a string of strong scores in recent National Student Surveys. When times are hard, the value for money offered by Hull — which often features at or near the top of lists of the cheapest places to live — is also harder to resist. The student population is not a typical one. Nearly three-quarters of them are recruited from within Yorkshire and the Humber; around one third are mature students aged over 21 when they begin their courses; and more than 55% come from homes where parents or carers did not attend university. Social diversity on campus is fostered by a contextual offer policy that has broad eligibility criteria. Investment in facilities continues apace, with healthcare, sports science and student accommodation the latest to benefit.

Paying the bills

The first 10 winners of the new chancellor’s scholarships will begin their degrees this month. Created to mark the appointment of Alan Johnson, the former Labour Cabinet minister, as university chancellor, applicants submitted an essay and a video on why they would be worthy recipients of the full tuition fee remittance. Applicants need to achieve at least 128 Ucas tariff points (equivalent to ABB at A-level) and show academic motivation. Maths students who gain a place with at least 128 Ucas tariff points, including an A grade in maths, are awarded the Gillian Stead scholarship, worth £2,100 a year, so long as they average 65 or better in each year of their degree. The university also awards Attitude Magazine Foundation and Jeremy Round scholarships, both worth £1,000, to LGBTQ+ students with either a disability or who come from homes with less than £25,000 annual income. A Kindness Cabinet distributes donations of food, clothing and other items to students in need. There are more than 2,200 places in student accommodation available, 다파벳 costing from £6,437 for a 41-week tenancy to £14,280 for a 51-week contract in the swankiest rooms.

What’s new?

A £2m investment by the university and the Department of Health and Social Care will create 10 virtual clinical environments, including live X-ray training rooms, for healthcare students. The facilities are central to the new diagnostic radiography degree being introduced next year, and its associated degree apprenticeship. The simulated patient interactions will provide students with real-life professional experiences during their clinical training. Sports science students will also benefit from a new strength and conditioning suite featuring a body composition scanner, which will help them understand the impact that exercise and lifestyle interventions can have on body mass and bone density. A new rugby league performance, education and community hub — the first of its kind — offers students new pathways to sporting careers. And the university’s recently renewed partnership with Team GB through to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics provides students with opportunities for volunteering, internships and involvement in joint research projects, as well as bringing some of the UK’s leading athletes onto campus. Hull is also leading a new national research centre focused on offshore wind, while also heading up a project analysing precarious coastal communities at risk from erosion.

Admissions, teaching and student support

Hull makes competitive offers to applicants at the best of times. But many also qualify for contextual offers which come in at 8 to 16 Ucas tariff points (equivalent to one or two A-level grades) below the standard rate. Among those who qualify for these discounted offers are applicants from postcodes among the 40% that send the fewest to university; those who are the first in their immediate family to go to university; those who have received free school meals; students who have a disability including dyslexia; those who are from a military family; and those who are care experienced. It’s a long list, and all but a handful of degrees are included in the scheme. A tailored support package for widening participation students is made available before they enrol, and remains so post-graduation thanks to expert careers advice from consultants who are specialists in the needs of these students. A targeted programme of help for neurodivergent students includes community activities, study skills and wellbeing support. The university works hard to protect the mental health and wellbeing of everyone on campus through a whole-university approach. Students are asked to work through a range of online modules prior to their arrival and during their induction, which include advice on mental health and wellbeing. There is plenty of online self-help guidance provided, as well as innovative programmes such as active wellbeing and therapy dogs. Cards featuring the telephone number of Hull’s student assistance programme printed on them are issued on arrival. Comprehensive mandatory and elective staff training is offered to help staff respond appropriately to distressed students. Students must complete an online sexual consent module produced by the university and the students’ union as part of their induction.
